Ohio Firearm Bill of Sale
An Ohio firearm bill of sale is a legal document that serves as proof that a handgun was transacted lawfully in the state of Ohio. It provides details about the purchaser, the vendor, the transfer of proprietorship, and the identity of any firearm being transacted. A notary will be required for this form.

Selling a Weapon in Private 

Anyone who is lawfully allowed to buy and possess a handgun in Ohio can also trade or transfer a weapon privately.

Banned from Purchasing

An individual is not qualified to acquire or possess a firearm in Ohio according to OH Rev Code 2923.13(A), if:

  • If the individual is an absconder from law

  • The individual is charged with or has been sentenced of a criminal offense of brutality, or has been adjudged a law-breaking child for committing a crime that would have been a criminal felony of violence if perpetrated by an older person;

  • The individual is charged with or has been sentenced of a crime which involves the unlawful possession, intake, trading, administration, distribution, or trafficking in any controlled substance, or has been adjudged a law-breaking child for committing a crime that, if perpetrated by an older person, would have been a crime which involves the unlawful possession, intake, trading, administration, distribution, or trafficking in any controlled substance;

  • The person is addicted to drugs, in danger of becoming addicted to drugs, or is a persistent drinker; or

  • The individual is being adjudged as mentally incompetent, has been adjudged as psychologically defective, has been confined to a mental facility, has been deemed by a court to be a psychologically unstable individual subject to a court order, or is a mandatory patient other than one who is being observed. "Mentally ill person subject to court order" and "patient" have the same definitions in this division as they have in section 5122.01 of the Revised Code.

Weapon registration

OH Rev Code 9.68 prevents the state of Ohio from maintaining a formal official registry of privately owned weapons.

Hidden (Concealed) Weapon

To have a hidden handgun in Ohio, an Ohio resident has to hold a permit to have a concealed weapon, as defined by OH Rev Code 2923.12(C)(2).

How to Request for a concealed carry

To request a Permit to Carry a Hidden Firearm, you have to be twenty-one years old or above.

Step 1: Fill out an application for a Concealed Weapon Permit from the State of Ohio.

Step 2 โ€“ Include the items listed below:

  • A recent color passport-style photo of the applicant that's taken within thirty days before the application is due;

  • Evidence of weapon proficiency, as defined in OH Rev Code 2923.125(B)(3);

  • A set of dactylograms as described in OH Rev Code ยง 311.41;

  • Evidence of a Foreign Registration Number (if not a United States resident); 

  • Evidence of a job in Ohio (if not an inhabitant of the state).

Step 3 โ€“ Present the request to the sheriff's department of the applicant's home or work county, or the sheriff's department of a county close to the applicant's home or work county.

Step 4: Make a payment for the application cost.

Step 5: Pass a criminal background check conducted by the federal government.

Step 6 โ€“ Within forty-five days after receiving the application, the sheriff will either accept or reject it.

Ohio accepts concealed carry permits from any state that has one, according to OH Rev Code 109.69.
