Montana Boat Bill of Sale
When two private parties are involved in selling and buying a vessel, to confirm the legality of this transaction, a Montana boat bill of sale is drawn. This document confirms that there has been a legal transfer of title of the vessel and it usually contains vital details about the person buying, the person selling, and the object of sale.
The person buying and the person selling are to include their signature on this form, as it is an important requirement to register the vehicle. It is also necessary that this form be approved by an authorized (Notary) individual.

Vessel Registration

It is a necessity to register automated boats and boats that are twelve feet or more in length. Unlike others, once a boat is registered in Montana, it doesn’t expire. However,  the boat’s decal is to be renewed once in three (3) years. To renew decals, you can physically visit an FWP office or visit the FWP Online Website.

Where to Register

To carry out initial registrations, the owner of the boat is to visit any County Treasurer Motor Vehicle office.

Registration Requirements For a Vessel

  • A completely filled application to obtain a certificate of title;

  • Proof of Purchase (in this case, a Bill of Sale);

  • Document showing proof of transfer of ownership;

  • Payment of Registration costs (registration differs according to how long or how old the vessel is).
