A New Jersey motor vehicle bill of sale is a legalized paper that proves the lawful transaction and transfer of proprietorship of a vehicle. For documentation purposes, this form collects details about the vendor, purchaser, and vehicle. The bill of sale must be notarized.

Form OS/SS UTA (Odometer Disclosure Statement): If the automobile is below sixteen thousand pounds or ten years old, this form must be added to the bill of sale.

Vehicle Registration

The New Jersey Motor Car Commission gives new owners sixty days to document their automobiles. The registration has to be renewed every year. The Motor Vehicle Commission allows you to renew your license virtually, by mail, or physically.

Where Should I Register?

New registrations have to be applied for physically at a Motor Vehicle Commission center. It is necessary to make an appointment.

Documents Required

  • Sale Document; 

  • Odometer Disclosure Statement (Form OS/SS UTA); 

  • Document/Certificate of Title (request for a replacement title with a Universal Title Application (Form OS/SS-UTA) at a Motor Vehicle Commission center);

  • Authorized/acceptable driver's permit;

  • A New Jersey Motor Vehicle Power of Attorney is mandated if the car is registered on the owner's behalf by someone other than the owner;

  • Documentation charges; 

  • and evidence of insurance with the following minimum requirements: 

    • Five thousand US dollars for belongings destruction; 

    • Fifteen thousand US dollars for a physical wound to a single person (for every accident);

    • and thirty thousand US dollars for physical injury to two or more persons (for every accident).
